Specifying a distribution transformer for Tanzania

Tanzania supplies low voltage at 230 V single-phase and 400 V three-phase, 50 Hz, and most distribution transformers step 11 kV or 33 kV down to 400 V. The other thing that decides the delivery schedule is import conformity: regulated goods need a PVoC certificate of conformity issued in the country of export before they ship.

Voltages on the network

LevelVoltage in EWURA and TANESCO documents
Medium voltage (distribution)11 kV and 33 kV; the Grid Code defines medium voltage as above 1 kV up to 33 kV
Low voltage, three-phase400 V (T1 and T2 customers)
Low voltage, single-phase230 V
Frequency and tolerance50 Hz; EWURA standardised user voltage 230/400 V, ±10 %

The interconnection guideline issued by EWURA lists 400 V, 11 kV and 33 kV as the distribution connection levels.

PVoC certificate of conformity

Consignments of regulated products entering Tanzania must carry a certificate of conformity (CoC) from the PVoC programme of the Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS). The CoC is issued before shipment, by a conformity-assessment company appointed by TBS, and it is presented at customs clearance.

The exporter applies with the final invoice, packing list, transport document and conformity documents such as type-test reports and the manufacturer’s quality-management certificate. Compliance is assessed against the Tanzanian standard (TZS) first, then East African standards, then international standards such as IEC, and only then the manufacturer’s own specification.

There are three routes: A, inspection and testing of each consignment; B, registration of a product for repeat shipments; C, licensing of a manufacturer that has a quality system, based on type testing and factory surveillance. Consignments below USD 1,000 FOB are outside the programme. On application by the importer to TBS, some categories can be exempted from the CoC, including investors’ capital goods and materials for specific Government projects. Zanzibar runs its own PVoC.

  • Ask your clearing agent to check the current TBS list of regulated products for your tariff code before you place the order.
  • If the transformers are part of a Government or investor project, ask whether an exemption application to TBS applies before the ship date is fixed.

What our published ratings cover

  • Oil-immersed S11 distribution transformers: HV 6 / 6.3 / 10 / 10.5 / 11 kV, LV 380, 400, 415 and 433 V, vector groups Dyn11, Yyn0 and Yzn11, tapping ±2 × 2.5 %, ONAN cooling, IEC 60076, 50 Hz. 400 V on the secondary and 11 kV on the primary are both in the published list.
  • 33 kV: the YBW compact substation line lists 33 kV on the high-voltage side; 33/0.4 kV oil-immersed distribution units are quoted on request. Power transformers 5,000–31,500 kVA are published with 33 kV high voltage and 6.3, 6.6, 11 or 15 kV low voltage.
  • TBS standards, a TANESCO specification or a project’s technical schedule: quoted to the document you send. Type-test reports and the PVoC route are agreed on the quotation.

Send with your enquiry

  • Who the transformers are for: TANESCO, a REA project, a mine, a plant or a private site, and the technical schedule or specification that applies
  • Rated power (kVA), HV (11 kV or 33 kV) and LV (400 V), vector group, tapping range
  • Pole-mounted, ground-mounted or compact substation; oil-immersed or dry-type; indoor or outdoor
  • Site altitude and coastal or inland location
  • Quantity, delivery date, port of discharge (Dar es Salaam or other), and whether you or your agent will handle the PVoC application
